ASA Travel Team, Tournament and Age Classifications

As we refer to these classifications in the other sections of the site, this section explains the ASA travel team and tournament classification system:

Team Classifications

A -- No residency restrictions
B -- At least 50% of the players must be from the same town
C -- 100% of the players must be from the same town

Tournament Classifications

Open -- Only A and B teams are eligible to participate
B/C -- Only B and C teams are eligible to participate
C -- Only C teams are eligible to participate

While there are always exceptions, "A" teams and "Open" tournaments tend to be the most challenging while "C" teams and tournaments test to be the least challenging.

We register our teams as either "B" or "C" based on a couple of factors. In the rare case in which a Panther team has a player who does not reside in Newton or attend the Newton public schools, we would be required to register as a "B" team. While this precludes that team from entering any "C" tournaments, our guiding principles say that we would only add a non-Newton player on our most competitive tournament-focused teams that would not find "C" tournaments to be sufficiently challenging.

We always register the second or third team at age division "C" as they would not typically be a good competitive fit for "Open" tournaments. For our top team at each age group, we review the list of tournament options and assess if there are either any "Open" or "C" tournaments that we would especially like to enter. As we cannot do both, we will pick our preferred path and apply to be registered as either a "B" team if we wish to enter an "Open" tournament or as a "C" team if we do not.

A player's age for the calendar year is based on her age at the start of that year. For example, a player born on January 1, 2003 would be 10U for all of 2014 while a player born on December 31, 2002 would be 12U for all of 2014.
